Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts is the 2070-seat home for the Canadian Opera Company and performance venue for the National Ballet of Canada. The centre also includes two large rehearsal rooms that can be used for smaller performances, and a phenomenally successful performance amphitheatre in the foyer overlooking the city.

The success of the hall is testament to the commitment and experience that was poured into the project. The acoustics team led by Sound Space Design created an opera acoustic especially for the Canadian Opera Company, translating subjective goals into architectural specifics in collaboration with the design team. The auditorium has clarity, resonance, strength and involvement. It is isolated from subway and streetcar vibration in order to have no audible background noise, which may have otherwise intruded on the high drama of silence and the quietest pianissimos.

The acoustics have been praised by the project’s champion, the late Maestro Richard Bradshaw, by superstar conductor Valery Gergiev, by artists, audiences, and the 60 international music critics who attended Canada’s first production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle, which was the inaugural production of the new opera house in September 2006.
