Emily McGeehin Principal, Acoustics

BSc in Physics with Acoustics, University of Surrey, UK (2000)
MSc Sound and Vibration Studies, ISVR, University of Southampton, UK (2002)
Institute of Acoustics, Audio Engineering Society, British Flute Society

Emily joined SSD in 2004, with acoustics, digital signal processing and intellectual property experience gained whilst working for the UK Patent Office (now the UK Intellectual Property Office) and other acoustics and A/V consultancies in the south of England.

Through diverse project experience Emily has developed an understanding of the needs and desires of clients, operators and performers, and has the technical background to translate them into buildable and affordable design solutions that architects can integrate into their designs for beautiful buildings. She works hard to re-enforce good acoustics practice throughout the design, tender and construction lifecycle of any given scheme.

Emily’s areas of expertise include room acoustics for music, speech and education; auditorium and stage acoustical modelling; building services noise control; A/V systems design; environmental noise (plant noise and performance sound emission, expert witness); and, British and international standards.

Emily has consulted throughout the design, tender and construction lifecycle of large performing arts projects, most notably the 2200-seat Winspear Opera House and Annette Strauss Square in the Dallas Arts District.

Her portfolio includes concert halls and theatres of all sizes with wide ranging briefs including Menuhin Hall, Surrey; The Royal Conservatory of Music and the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto; Orchestra Hall, Minneapolis; and, the Bernie Grant Centre, London. Many of these venues included a main auditorium and rehearsal space, and often multipurpose with additional uses as recital, recording, cabaret, or conferencing venues.

Emily’s interest in music education has been invaluable as project acoustician on several successful projects, including new music departments for Sherborne and Uppingham schools and Pangbourne College which included recital, ensemble, group and individual rehearsal rooms, and music technology and recording studios.

Emily is currently working on renovations to Colston Hall in Bristol (Grade II listed). Alongside detailed design work, this project has involved a full noise impact assessment and a statement of acoustical evidence to communicate the acoustical basis for and justification of proposals for the Main Hall. In the initial stages of both the Colston Hall and Orchestra Hall projects, Emily conducted structured collaborations with clients and users prior to confirming, outlining and refining the acoustical brief. This ensures that the completed buildings meet their needs, expectations, and aspirations for the future.

Other recent work also includes design and specification of acoustical improvements to the auditorium at St. John’s College, Oxford, including the incorporation of a state-of-the-art electroacoustic enhancement system into sensitive and complex architecture, and renovations to the Imperial War Museum in London.

In addition to consulting, Emily works on business and technical development, particularly acoustical modelling, measurement and analysis. She is an experienced advisor on noise-related planning issues, and able to communicate and mitigate for the differences between performance sound and more common forms of industrial noise emission.

With a passion for music and an active interest in jazz flute, Emily enjoys performing in local bands and wind ensembles, and amateur theatre.
